ST Paul’s Musami and Rio Tinto legend, Peter Phiri, who died last Friday in Harare, was laid to rest at Kadoma Cemetery, on Sunday.
He was 84.
The former Rio Tinto diminutive midfielder had been unwell for the past two years after suffering two strokes. Scores of mourners, including Zimbabwean football legends, thronged Kadoma Cemetery to bid farewell to the late footballer who later became a respected administrator.
Former Rio Tinto defender, Phineas Mutyavaviri,who played alongside the late Phiri in the early ‘70s described the late footballer as a great player. “I played alongside the late Phiri at St Paul’s Musami from 1969 after he had been signed by Father Davies from Rio Tinto, when it was still known as Cam and Motor.
“In 1971 I joined him at Rio Tinto.
“Peter is the one who made me settle very well in Kadoma, he groomed me to be a good and reliable defender for Rio Tinto.
“He was the architect behind all the signings of all the great players who joined Rio Tinto – the likes of Joseph Zulu, Robert Godoka, Ephert Lungu, John Phiri, Raphael Phiri, Charles Chirwa.”
He is survived by his wife, Esnath and four children, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
