CHRIS LAMPARD, who was in-charge of the local legends, said he was impressed with his charges’ fighting spirit despite going down 7-57 against a well-drilled South African Rugby Legends side at Victoria Falls Primary School.

A depleted local side, which was missing several big name players such as Costa Dinha and Brighton Chivandire, among others, was no match against a star-studded SA team who dominated through-out the match.

The South African Legends scored their first try in the fifth minute but missed the conversion.

They quickly touched down again through their winger John Mametsa.

By half time the South African Legends where leading 34-0 and they dominated the entire first half as they pressurised the hosts in their half.

In the second half, Zimbabwe tried to come back into the game but they missed too many tackles and in the end were not good enough to overpower the South Africans.

In the last 11 minutes of the match, Kennedy Tsimba, a former Zimbabwean player, who played for both sides, helped the hosts score a try, having scored one for the visitors.

“We were down by 24-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game but I think the guys got composed and started doing better,” said Lampard.

“Most of the players for our team could not make it because they need to sponsor themselves so we really hope that in the future we will have enough money to give all the players.

“I think for us to improve we need to make this event an annual tournament,” said Lampard.

South African captain Jonathan Mokuena said they were happy to play the game.
