‘Legends Night’ concert goes to Bulawayo

AFTER successfully hosting the “Legends Night” concert, two months ago at the Harare International Convention Centre, organisers are taking the concept to Bulawayo this weekend.

The event, which is a musical celebration of Zimbabwe’s iconic musicians, is hosted by popular boy band, In Total Band, and they have announced that the Bulawayo edition will see local legends such as Albert Nyathi, Iyasa and Jeyz Marabini sharing the stage with Dereck Mpofu, Vuyi Sax, Emma the Violinist, Lady Tshawe and Band Fusion.

The event will run under the vintage theme, tallying with the music played and attendees are expected to dress the part.

The In Total Band, which is made up of Joseph Chinouriri (saxophone), Takakunda Mukundu (guitar) and Naphtali Chivandikwa (bass), was formed in 2014 and has other members joining as dancers and vocalists.

In an interview, Chinouriri said preparations are at an advanced stage and this edition will have guest performances from some living legends.

“The script is the same, just that it will be in a different location. We are now in Bulawayo and rehearsals are going on well. We are happy with the progress so far, and the good news is that we invited some of the living legends to come and celebrate with us,” he said.

“The confirmed list includes Iyasa, Albert Nyathi, Jeys Marabini, and we will have others from Harare and Bulawayo supporting us. We are also looking forward to hosting the Cool Crooners.”

Chinouriri said they have sought approval for their discography, from the families and respective authorities and they are happy with the initiative.

“We have sought guidance and gone through all the necessary formalities and processes for the show to go ahead. For this show we will be playing music by legends who include Jeyz Marabini, Albert Nyathi, Don Gumbo, Cool Crooners, Sandra Ndebele, Beatar Mangethe, Busi Ncube, Chase Skuza and Iyasa among others.”

The saxophonist said that after Bulawayo they are taking the edition to the United Kingdom in August.

“After high demand for our music, we have also received an invitation to host Legends Night in the United Kingdom. We have started the preparations and the venue is already booked. We are hosting it in Birmingham. Many thanks to our partner Afrilegacy Network for making this possible,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chinouriri added that many have been quizzing about our name, In Total Band, but the band’s name was inspired by a phrase used during a “Jesus and Jazz” concert hosted by their friend Mbaki Nleya, years ago.

“We came together after performing at a wedding and noticed that the demand for our performance was growing , prompting us to form the band,” he said.
