Legends recall derby memories

“They were always special, but if l am to single out one then there is one match in the 1980s whose date I can’t remember but what I know is I played so well, saving point blank shots and I remember Moses Chunga ended up signaling to the Dynamos bench that he be substituted.
We ended up winning the match 2-0.

I played a lot of derbies for a long time and I had battles against Oscar Motsi, Joel Shambo and Joe Mugabe.
But I would like to believe the one we beat Caps United 1-0 with 10-men at the National Sports Stadium, I am sure it was in 1995.
Hope Chihota was sent off a few minutes after he had scored in the 11th minute.

The 1996 BP Cup semi-final remains firmly etched in my mind because I caused commotion after I scored the winning goal with just seven minutes left on the clock.
Dynamos fans ran riot, throwing missiles onto the pitch and the match was bandoned at 1-0 in favour of Makepekepe.

The 1996 derby at Rufaro has to be the best, it was a game of free kicks and all we wanted was a win or draw. Vitalis Takawira and Tauya Murewa were a menace for Dynamos but I managed to shut them out.
Kaitano Tembo and Mpumelelo Dzowa scored from free kicks and the game ended 1-1. It was the result that we wanted and went on to win the league title.

Mpumelelo Dzowa
My most memorable derby is the 1996 1-1 draw at Rufaro, I scored from the freekick in the second half, a goal that secured the all important point that we needed to win the title.
I remember very well that I didn’t train the whole week because I was in Bulawayo preparing for my sister’s wedding.
Caps United flew me to Harare the morning of the game and I delivered the result. I missed the celebrations after because I had to go back to Bulawayo but I still have the video copy of what transpired that day.
That was the best of my career.

It is difficult to tell which one was the best derby because every time Dynamos plays Caps United, it’s war. But I think the 1994 Africa Day final is the one I remember most. We were 0-2 down at halftime and Caps United looked like they were running away with the Cup. We came back a rejuvenated side in the second half and scored four times in the last 15 minutes with Digital (Vitalis Takawira) and Doctor (Tauya Murewa) the main actors. It ended 4-2 in favour of DeMbare.

My most memorable Harare Derby was back in 2003 and I was playing for Dynamos. lt was the first game of the season at the NSS. What makes it memorable was that it was my first start in a Derby and also I was facing my brother Elton. On that, DeMbare lost 2-0.
