LOCAL businessman, Panayiotis (Peter) Leondios has been appointed patron of the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association (Bafa), a move that will cement the relationship developed between the two.
Southern Region Area Zones, chairman, Charles Chunda revealed they had decided to honour Leondios for his long service to the game, in particular his support of Bafa. He said they decided to come up with the post to ensure there is a father figure at Bafa that can assist them and offer them advice.
“If there is anyone befitting of the privilege, it is Leondios for the sterling role that he has played over the years in supporting Bafa through the Bafa Townshend and Butcher Trophy that remains the longest running football knock-out tournament in the country. His commitment has been next to none and we have known him as an all-weather friend who has stood by us through thick and thin enabling us to run our programmes,” said Chunda, who was previously Bafa vice-chairperson.
Leondios, who runs several businesses in the city including Townshend and Butcher Sports shop, expressed his appreciation at the gesture saying he is delighted by being honoured and will endeavour to play his role effectively. He said it was critical to lend a hand to football in these tough times.
“We come a long way with Bafa and I am happy that our relationship is still growing. Football needs our assistance and more so in this time when the economy is struggling. Being a patron is not an easy task having to offer advice and assistance where possible without interfering with how things are done,” he said.
Leondios narrated how the founder of Townshend and Butcher, Wally Butcher had initiated the relationship with Bafa in 1957 when he started the company by sponsoring the Townshend and Butcher Trophy.
He said when he took over the business in 1986, he saw it fit to continue the partnership with Bafa has not wavered in his support of the league.
“There are many players, administrators and referees that have emerged from the league and I think it is something that should be celebrated. I am looking forward to the continued existence of the league. The media has also played a critical role in ensuring the public is aware of what is happening within the league and I would like to applaud them for these efforts,” added Leondios.
