Several heads of state have officially opened the Harare Agriculture Show since independence, among them Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere (1984), Dr Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia (1988), South Africa’s Nelson Mandela (1994) and Festus Mogae of Botswana (1999).

Presidents from Kenya, Swaziland, Malawi, Mozambique, DRC, Namibia and Equatorial Guinea have also officially opened the show over the years.
Outside Africa, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Lord Plumb of Coles Hill (then President of the European Parliament), and Prince Edward of the United

Kingdom officially opened the 1986, 1990 and 1995 shows respectively.

There is tight security at this year’s show with plainclothes security officers having been jointly deployed with Zimbabwe Agriculture Show officers to boost security.
ZAS has also installed a closed-circuit television for security purposes.
