THE preservation of indigenous culture is vital to ensure peace prevails in the country since it places emphasis on respect for the elderly and property, Chief Masembura has said.
Speaking during Culture Week commemorations in Bindura last week, Chief Masembura, said: “Our culture does not encourage violence, but it encourages peace and the respect for elders. It brings us together as a people and if our culture is imparted to young people, the crime rate will decrease.”
He said indigenous culture was endowed with the concept of hunhu/ubuntu which entails respecting the elderly, who in turn impart traditional values which do not promote criminality and violence against each other.
Chief Masembura called on educational authorities to include culture studies in the new curriculum so that it can be taught in schools in order to preserve it.
Speaking at the same occasion, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland Central provincial manager Mr Jonathan Kudangiranwa said the Culture Week commemorations were a way of trying to inculcate a culture of respect for the elders among youths and introduce to them some of the social activities that were practiced in the past.
