While I am usually an optimistic person, I do not really think we are going to have normal rainfall this season.
This is despite the fact that we recently received some rains.
I strongly urge farmers to come up with strategies on how best they can utilise their space and resources.
Those who do not have irrigation facilities might want to consider planting drought resistant crops.
With the effect of climate change taking its toll, the weather conditions have been unpredictable and the dry spells should not be ignored.
We must not lose hope and just stand by while we wait for adequate rains.
Government should intervene, if possible, so that farmers can access inputs for drought resistant crops.
So far, the Meteorological Services Department has let us down in terms of informing the public on this season’s rain predictions.
All of their predictions so far have been wrong. They predicted normal to below normal rains when in fact it is below normal.
If their technology is inefficient, then their equipment needs to be upgraded so that at least they will give us more accurate weather information.
