Liberation struggle detractors slammed

saying they do not appreciate the value of Independence.
Speaking at a memorial service for late national hero and Central Intelligence Organisation deputy director-general Cde Maynard Muzariri in Mount Darwin at the weekend, the Vice President said participating in the war demonstrated great courage.
She likened belittling the liberation struggle to “destroying what others have built”.
“Some among us are good at destroying what others have built. They belittle the spirit of the departed,” she said. This is unfortunate and very dangerous for the country. There are many sad memories that we have from the liberation struggle. Tikaita chipo chehanganwa hapana kwatinosvika (Forgetfulness will not get us anywhere).”
Vice-President Mujuru said Cde Muzariri was a gallant fighter whose exploits were matched by a few. His bravery, she said, ensured his service to the country was second to none.
“We had a special bond because we were of the same age. He and I joined the struggle at the age of 18. I regarded him as a twin brother because we also operated in the same area of Ruya during the war.”
She also urged CIO members to emulate their late boss.
“You should be diligent and follow in the footsteps of Cde Muzariri. He was a man whom the Presidium could trust to always deliver accurate information, important in defending the sovereignty of the country.
“I urge you to stick to your work and not to pursue rumours because that will destroy the nation.”
Zanu-PF National Chairman Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo said Cde Muzariri was a “great man who had a great force hidden in gentle command”.
“He was a great man, great man from the heart and a great man from the mind. Such people never die; they depart,” he said.
“We are saddened that he left us at such a young age. He was one true patriot who believed that Zimbabwe comes first. He was averse to rumours and a man who wanted facts because he knew that rumours could destroy a nation.”
In a speech read on his behalf, CIO director-general Cde Happyton Bonyongwe said the department was strengthened by Cde Muzariri’s expertise.
“I benefited much from Muzariri because he was an exemplary leader. We developed a personal bond and as the director-general, I always cherished his advice.”
Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Constantine Chiwenga said: “I got to know him in 1974 when he joined the army as a member of what we called the B52 forces.
“He immediately became an important member of the Zanla forces because of his dedication to duty and exemplary demeanour.
“He was one of the commanders whom we relied on during the war and he remained resolute despite much adversity during the war.”
