Librarians have been urged to demonstrate innovation and acquire new proficiencies aligning with contemporary technologies that render them pertinent to the emerging heritage 5.0 education system.
Librarians have been facing challenges, chief among them failure to keep pace with a rapidly changing digital environment, which was always presenting new ways and channels of information delivery.
President for Zimbabwe Libraries Association (ZimLa), Mr McDonald Nhakura, made the remarks at a recently held conference in Gweru.
The three-day conference was held under the theme “efficient information dissemination and knowledge management”.
“Librarians should demonstrate innovation and acquire new proficiencies aligning with contemporary technologies that render them pertinent to the emerging heritage 5.0 education,” Mr Nhakura said.
“As librarians, we need to welcome and embrace the current transition as this improves on information dissemination and knowledge management.”
Speaking at the same occasion, Midlands State University (MSU) Vice Chancellor Professor Grace Mugumbate said the learning environment continued to evolve daily with the need to adapt to emerging technologies and trends worldwide.
“The library community should embrace current advancements and incorporate modern trends such as artificial intelligence,” she said.
Prof Mugumbate said the utilisation of chat GPT had significantly transformed the manner in which learners engaged with research materials. ZimLa is an association that represents library, records, archives and information professionals in the country.
