Life gives us tough choices

LIFE is a beautiful gift from God.

However, at times it is filled with so much pain.

Every day we are faced with circumstances that require both our attention and critical decisions.

And it is in the process of dealing with challenging circumstances that we often have to endure some pain.

Every living soul has life issues to deal with.

Life is generally defined as the period from birth to death.

It can also be described as the events and happenings taking place around us.

Life revolves around relationships, as we do not exist in isolation.

It entails different aspects such as managing relationships to much more complex situations.

Perhaps the most difficult decision that one can make is choosing whether one should live or die.

There is a Greek word called ‘euthanasia’, which is made up of two parts — ‘eu’, meaning ‘good or well’, and ‘thanatos’, which means ‘death’.

‘Euthanasia’, therefore, means good death or or ‘mercy killing’.

This is the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering.

Picture this: Say you have had a relative who has been bed-ridden for years and the doctors broke the news to you that they are having multiple organ failure.

Their chances of surviving are close to none.

And it is your call to decide whether to have the life-support machines turned off or to leave them in pain until the final moment.

Certainly, this will be a tough decision to make.

How can one deal with the guilt of approving a mercy killing of a loved one?

Since God is the giver of life, does He condone killing of another in an attempt to give them rest or an escape from their pain?

Life never gives us easy options.

Unfortunately, these are the decisions that we have to make in life.

We always have to make wise but tough decisions.

For example, should rape victims terminate resultant pregnancies or raise children conceived from this heinous act?

Or would you visit a jailed spouse accused of raping a close relative or any other person?

Are we as a society ready to assist a relative or neighbour in such a predicament(s)?

When do we apply forgiveness and mercy?
