Lift sanctions now!

DEFENCE Minister Cde Sydney Sekeramayi has said the illegal sanctions imposed by the West must be removed as they have affected socio-economic development, particularly the welfare of orphans and widows. In a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Home Affairs Cde Kembo Mohadi at the Zimbabwe National Army charity horse race held in Harare on Sunday, Cde Sekeramayi said the initiative was meant to facilitate the underprivileged members of the defence forces as well as orphans and widows.

“The effects of the illegal sanctions have not spared our defence forces. Despite these illegal sanctions, our defence forces have remained resolute and focused on the defence of the country,” he said.

“Our health delivery and education systems among others, have been negatively affected hence this necessitates the need for us to take responsibility of the welfare and social well-being of the underprivileged members of our defence forces and their dependants,” said Cde Sekeramayi.

The charity events this year targeted to raise US$500 000 which would be channelled towards improving the plight of the needy. Cde Sekeramayi said various sectors should be committed to supporting the less privileged in society to improve the nation’s livelihood.
