A 15-YEAR-OLD Bulilima boy died on the spot while his seven-year-old cousin and 48-year-old aunt sustained some burns when they were struck by lightning on Saturday. Julian Moyo of Tjemahale Village in Khame Ward and his aunt, Cornelia Ndlovu, abandoned their work in the fields following a heavy downpour at around 4PM, but failed to reach home when lightning struck as he was sheltering under a tree.
Ndlovu said as she and her seven-year-old son approached that tree, there was a blinding light that caused all of them to fall to the ground.
“Julian rushed in front of us and squatted beneath a tree. He called out to me and told me to come to the tree as it was shielding him from the rain. I told him to proceed home instead of hiding under the tree. As I neared the tree lightning struck and all I recall seeing was a blaze of fire and we all fell to the ground,” said Ndlovu.
She said when she woke up a few hours later when the rain had stopped, she saw the two boys lying on the ground at a distance.
The 15-year-old was already died.
Ndlovu said she and her son sustained some burns.
