Lightning strikes twice, kills couple

Catherine Mutema Midlands Reporter
THEY say lightning never strikes twice. Untrue, Midlands police said yesterday after a Gokwe couple was killed by lightning minutes apart.A woman who survived a lightning strike which killed her husband died after a second bolt – just as she was getting help, say                         police.

Calisto Mazambuko, 29, and his wife Mary Mzengi, 32, of Mazambuko Village under Chief Nemangwe in Gokwe South, were out tending the fields when tragedy struck.

Calisto’s brother, Rhinos, arrived to find him dead and his wife writhing in agony nearby, but still alive. Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the Midlands police spokesman, said Rhinos tried to administer first aid on Mzengi in a bid to resuscitate her – but lightning struck again, finishing her off.

Meanwhile, police said a prison officer fishing at a dam in Lalapansi was also killed by lightning. Danmore Ushe, 29, of Hwahwa Prison Camp, was fishing with a friend, Kudzaishe Simawo, at around 5PM at Whitewaters Dam in Lalapansi when lightning struck.

Ushe was killed instantly and Simawo survived with moderate burns. Insp Mahoko said: “We appeal to members of the public to be cautious and avoid being in open spaces when it’s raining and there’s lightning.”
