UK-based Bulawayo-born rapper Limzy M (born Limukani Isaac Nyoni) has released a new single, “Top Dawg”.

A dog is simply known as a domesticated carnivorous mammal, but in hip hop terms, “dawgs” are the real deal. These are respected emcees who change the game.

This collaboration with USA-based Zimbabwean rapper, Brucella Moyo celebrates female empowerment, reassures self-belief while showcasing a unique blend of Afro Trap, Hip-Hop Rap, and Kwaito.

Limzy M’s artistic journey began in 2014 in Bulawayo, sparked by a youthful act of rebellion when he and a friend “stole” a rhyme book from his friend’s brother to replicate bars in it. Inspired by the Kwaito sounds of DJ Cleo and the lyrical prowess of South African rapper K.O, Limzy M then evolved into a multi-faceted artiste who continues to push boundaries.
“Working with Brucella has been an amazing experience. During Women’s History Month, it’s a time to celebrate the achievements of women, and collaborating with her has allowed us to highlight important stories and messages,” Limzy M shared with Chronicle Showbiz.
He said Brucella’s infectious passion contributed to the empowering message of their song.

The genesis of “Top Dawg” saw Limzy M and his team, including producer PrinceT, crafting a compelling chorus and instrumental back in 2022. After a period of anticipation, Limzy M introduced Brucella to the track in 2024, and she breathed new life into it.
“We did the whole song online, and her massive verse inspired me to step up my game. The final verse I wrote was hyped by the team, and that’s when I knew we had something special.”

Reflecting on his early days, Limzy M expressed nostalgia for his initial crew called “Inferno Gang” which had six members in 2016. He also particularly remembers the late popular music producer, Joe Maseko and the late Luveve rapper, Calvin Nhliziyo who helped him in his formative years.
“They were instrumental in my journey as an artiste. Joe always pushed me to think outside the box, while Cal_Vin’s creativity inspired me to explore new styles. Their support helped shape my artistic voice,” he recalled.

Beyond music, Limzy M has dabbled in acting and gaming, experiences he described as enriching.

“Each role taught me something new about storytelling and character development,” he explained.

His background in Theatre Arts, where he excelled, has informed his approach to music and performance.

Limzy M’s cross-cultural collaborations extend beyond Brucella. His work with Tanzanian artiste Longnus Huncho highlights the importance of global connections in music.
“Collaborating with him was incredible! It opened my eyes to different styles and techniques, and our blend resonated with audiences,” he said, about their “SoundCheck” EP, which features diverse cultural influences.

The contrast between the UK and Bulawayo has also played a significant role in Limzy M’s development as an artiste.
“The music industry in Bulawayo is vibrant and diverse, reflecting a rich cultural heritage,” he noted.

However, he acknowledged artistes’ challenges, such as limited funding and exposure. In contrast, the UK’s larger, more developed hip-hop scene has exposed him to new artistic expressions, pushing him to elevate his craft.

With “Top Dawg,” he not only celebrates the achievements of women, especially in the hip-hop circuit but also showcases the potential of cultural fusion in music. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
