Consistent female mbira player, Lioness Gwenyambira has vowed to promote the use of traditional instruments in schools after teaming up with three former Mbira DzeNharira members.
The trio are Chaka Gwedeza who plays bass mbira, Takawira Devera (rhythm) and Sekuru Shumba (lead).

In an interview, Lioness said the pact was now paying off as they are getting positive feedback from schools.

“We are one happy family from Norton determined to empower children by teaching them to play traditional instruments,” she said.

“On Saturday, we are conducting a session at St Agness Primary School in Gokwe where there is plenty of untapped talent.

“Of course, we will hold another show for adults in Norton this Sunday but our main focus is children.”

Lioness is one of the few female mbira players holding regular shows along with Sasha Amadhuve and Diana “Mangwenya” Samkange.
