People who are found littering will now be sent to prison or fined $20. This was revealed at the launch of an anti-littering campaign by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Bulawayo City Council and the police in Bulawayo on Friday.Addressing members of the public at Basch Street Terminus popularly known as Egodini, the provincial environmental manager for Bulawayo, Decent Ndlovu urged kombi drivers to install bins in their vehicles to stop passengers from throwing litter through windows.
“I would like to warn kombi drivers that failure to have bins in their vehicles will attract a fine of $20 or imprisonment therefore I urge you to desist from such crimes,” Ndlovu said.
Ndlovu urged flea market vendors to keep their areas of operation clean, saying they have often been accused of being litterbugs.
He challenged women to exercise extra hygiene especially with the use of pampers as they can lead to a cholera outbreak if recklessly dumped.
The cleansing superintendent from the Bulawayo City Council Nkanyiso Ndlovu said the campaign was among several efforts in place to restore the city’s status as the cleanest in Africa.
“Bulawayo was recognised as one of the cleanest cities in Africa and one of the aims of this campaign is to restore the city’s standard of cleanliness which has dropped significantly,” he said.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said they were working closely with EMA and the city council in ensuring cleanliness in the city. “EMA and the police together with the city council will be arresting law breakers who exercise illegal dumping, l would like to urge members of the public to report those who go against the law,” he said.
Inspector Moyo encouraged members of the public to make good use of bins that have been provided at street corners to keep the city clean.
