BEING a parent comes with a lot of responsibilities.
You are a role model, hero and teacher to your child. Thus, parents need to be exemplary all the time. Psychologists argue toddlers tend to learn more from their parents or guardians’ actions than what we say or tell them to do.
If you always exude good deeds, be rest assured your children will follow suit.
After all, an apple never falls far from the tree. We have instances in which adults are inspired by their mentors into good practices. There are church leaders that have taken it upon themselves to join the Government’s initiatives in keeping our country clean.
Resultantly, their congregants have followed suit and supported their actions all the time. Not every parent is a qualified teacher, however, they are considered trainers because of the role they play in the upbringing of their children.
It takes special skill to morally groom a child. But not most, if not all, of the abilities are not learnt from college or university, but are inborn. When you mistakenly do something wrong, probably due to an emotional outburst, explain to the kids that it was a wrong course of action.
Above all, make sure that you do not repeat the same mistake. Going forward, how do you react when angered or how do you celebrate when you are happy?
Similarly, how do you interact with others?
Whatever answer(s) you give to the above questions, always remember your approach or course of action is your indirect lesson to the kids as their role model.
Children cannot value your teaching when you indicate left then turn right.
A parent in business might be in the habit of lying when dealing with customers in the presence of children, but you must expect your children to lie to you as a result. This is because you have normalised lies to them.
As parents, we should always be cautious of our actions and behaviours because that is the inheritance we are bequeathing our children.
Inheritance is not just in material things or money, it is also in the values and teachings you impart to them. There is no better inheritance than love and unity.
Proverbs 22:6 — “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it”.
The scripture is further butresssed in Deuteronomy 11:18-19 – “You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up”.
Quote of the week: Parents need to be exemplary all the time.
