DYNAMOS president Kenny Mubaiwa says the offloading of players such as Rodrick Mutuma, Stephen Alimenda and Sydney Linyama is a sign that the club’s executive does not interfere with technical issues.
DeMbare coach Lloyd Mutasa recently wielded the axe on the trio and roped in several youngsters as part of his efforts to rebuild the Glamour Boys.
“The decision to offload those players was done by the coach and we support him,” said Mubaiwa. “Personally, I have been accused of meddling in technical issues to the extent that some have accused my executive of forcing players on coaches or telling them which ones to offload.
“That is why this time we are making it clear to the coach that he is free to do what he wants with the team – including choosing another assistant of his choice – as long as it brings us the desired results. When I say results I do not mean draws.”
Former Triangle coach Biggie Zuze has been linked with the Dynamos assistant coach’s job.
Despite leading DeMbare to a disappointing fifth position last season – the club’s worst finish in a decade – Mutasa was given a fresh mandate at the team’s AGM last month.
But there was a catch: he was required to win the first five matches, inclusive of preseason friendly games.
That condition reportedly did not go down well with Mutasa who felt the target was unfair and in an ensuing meeting, the executive softened its stance.
Mubaiwa has had a love-hate relationship with Mutasa and his assistant Murape Murape, but the administrator promised the duo his “full support” in an interview last week.
“There is no way I can just hate Mutasa or his assistant Murape because when the team wins it also makes my job easier. Why shouldn’t I support the coaches? If the team is not winning it also affects my job. What we want are results period,” he said.
Mutasa took over from failed Portuguese gaffer Paolo Jorge Silva in May 2016 when Dynamos was hovering above the relegation zone. He quickly stabilised the ship and finished a decent fifth place.
This is the second time in six seasons that Mutasa is starting a season as Dynamos’ head coach.
The last time he was sacked midway through the 2011 season before his then assistant Kallisto Pasuwa took over and won his first of four league titles.
And Mubaiwa says they will not hesitate to act if results don’t go their way.
“But remember football is like a factory, if production targets are not met it becomes a problem. In that same vein, we are saying we will be monitoring the progress along the way.”
Mutasa has embarked on a rebuilding exercise after losing key players.
2016 Soccer Star of the Year finalist Godknows Murwira and utility player Dominic Mukandi are now at Ngezi Platinum Stars, while rising attacking linkman Brett Amidu was snatched by FC Platinum.
Star goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva and Masimba Mambare are yet to sign new contracts while the deal to keep influential left back Ocean Mushure is shrouded in uncertainty.
