EFFORTS are underway to upgrade Beitbridge District Hospital to a referral centre with specialised services catering to the SADC region, as it serves as a key gateway along the north-south corridor.
Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Albert Nguluvhe, revealed this on Sunday while officially commissioning a new solar-powered water system at the hospital, aimed at improving healthcare service delivery.
The Cross Borders for Economic Development (Cross Borders for ED) supported the project, which comprises a solar-powered borehole, water storage tanks and a water point.
This development enables the 170-bed hospital to better meet the needs of patients, maintain hygiene standards, and support a range of medical procedures for the estimated 250 000 local residents, in addition to the 15 000 people, who transit through the Beitbridge border daily and others from neighbouring districts.
In his remarks, Minister Nguluvhe emphasised the importance of reliable water infrastructure in healthcare facilities and expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, who contributed to the project’s success.
“The new system not only addresses the immediate needs of the hospital, but also aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainability and resilience in public infrastructure,” he said.
“By harnessing solar energy, the hospital will reduce its dependency on conventional power sources, leading to cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint.
I commend Cross Borders for ED and other stakeholders, who continue to support this hospital as we seek to improve healthcare delivery.”
The Minister noted that improving service delivery in public institutions can only be achieved through collaboration and public-private partnerships.
“This kind of support from various stakeholders is welcome and in line with our President’s philosophy ‘Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo; Shango lifhatiwa nga vhane vhalo,” he added.
“It is only Zimbabweans who can build and move the country forward, and I am pleased to see Cross Borders for ED walking that path.
“As Government, we are aware of the challenges facing the health sector, and these are being addressed under the leadership of our capable leader, President Dr Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. I urge corporates and multi-stakeholder groups to continue pooling resources to support improved service delivery at public institutions.”
Communities in Beitbridge have warmly welcomed the development, recognising its positive impact on healthcare services. Patients and staff are optimistic about the benefits the new system will bring, from enhanced medical care to improved sanitation.
District Medical Officer, Dr Lenos Samhere, said the intervention to boost water supply at the hospital has brought relief to medical staff.
“As we speak, we are sending theatre equipment to Gwanda for autoclaving (sterilisation) every three days, which is not sustainable,” he said.
“The borehole water is suitable for many services except laundry and autoclaving in theatres. We would therefore welcome support for water purification machines.”
Cross Borders for ED national chairman, Mr David Masomere, said their decision to intervene at the hospital was driven by a desire to save lives.
He added that the organisation would continue identifying other areas of collaboration to help the Government fulfil its mandate, especially in the delivery of essential services.
ZimBorders Consortium General Manager, Mr Nqobile Ncube, highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in service delivery and infrastructure development.
“This is commendable,” he said.
ZimBorders Consortium upgraded the Beitbridge Border Post at a cost of US$300 million through a public-private partnership.
Beitbridge Town Clerk, Mr Loud Ramakgapola, said:
“As Beitbridge Municipality, we are pleased to see other players stepping in to help us deliver quality services. This solar water system comes at a time when we are facing significant water supply challenges.”
Beitbridge Senator, Tambudzani Mohadi added:
“We look forward to improved services at this hospital, especially in the maternal health section.
“We eagerly await Government’s move to upgrade this institution and equip it with all the necessary resources befitting its new status.”
