The club will stage the tournament under the auspices of the Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (BABA).
Participants will battle it out in the light welterweight, featherweight, lightweight, bantamweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions.
BABA chairperson, Petros Masiyambumbi said the one-day competition would be open to other provinces. Masiyambumbi, who is also the Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association technical director, said they will also be using the tournament to prepare for the African Championships scheduled for Gaborone, Botswana.
“The tournament was organised by a local club and we have decided to make it open to everyone. We have invited other provinces to come and be part of the event since we are preparing for the African Championships in Botswana from 8 to 15 June.
“We want the boxers going for the championships to have an opportunity to prepare themselves.
“We are hoping to send about 10 fighters including female boxers because they will be taking part in the championships.
“We have two UK-based boxers that I have spoken to and one of them is coming to Zimbabwe on the 5th of June and they are definitely going with him while the other one has not yet officially communicated if he will make it,” said Masiyambumbi.
Masiyambumbi said they have retained the team they had selected for the Olympic qualifiers, which failed to compete in Morocco due to lack of funds.
“We are not going to select a team during this tournament because we already have a team that was supposed to travel to Morocco but failed, so it is going to be preparations only. We hope to stage another tournament in Chivhu so that these guys get more exposure before they leave for Botswana,” said Masiyambumbi.
Some of the boxers expected to compete are the Masiyambumbi brothers — Brighton and Steven — Beven Nyamhondera, Ndodana Moyo, Emmanuel Mashiri, Fortune Chidzivo and Gamuchirai Sithole.
