THE Hartsfield Rugby Grounds in Bulawayo were full of excitement today as young footballers took part in the Master Masiku Under‑12 Tournament. The event was made possible by the support of Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR), Budget Cash & Carry, Corporate 24 and Ecosure. It was a day of joy, skill and community spirit, showing the strength of grassroots football in the city.

Lobengula United were crowned champions after playing with great teamwork and determination. Tshabalala Warriors finished as runners‑up, while defending champions Young Flying Stars Soccer Academy (YFSSA Team-A) claimed the bronze medal. Archazia came fourth, and other teams such as Brasilians, Mountain Climbers, Victory Queens and YFSSA Team-B also gave strong performances that added colour and energy to the tournament.

There were also special awards for individual players. Irvine Mpofu of YFSSA was named the best goalkeeper, showing bravery and quick reactions. Prince Dube of Lobengula United was recognised as the best defender. The top goal scorers were Philip Hlatini of YFSSA Team-A and Kudzaishe Chanaiwa of Brasilians, who both scored six goals. The Player of the Tournament award went to Tshabalala Warriors player maker Raymond Moyo.

Tournament organiser Collen Nyambiya, director of YFSSA, thanked the sponsors and the community for their support. He said the event would not have been possible without the help of coaches, referees, parents and volunteers who worked hard to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Master Masiku, the former Railstars, Amazulu, Highlanders and Zimbabwe national team midfielder, was proud to see the young players in action.

“It is a great honour to watch these children play with such passion. Football gave me a chance in life, and I am happy to give back by supporting the next generation. My thanks go to the sponsors who believe in grassroots sport, together we are building dreams and shaping futures.”

BBR’s presence at the tournament was felt not only through its role as principal sponsor but also through the encouragement it gave to the young players and the community at large. General Manager Thabani Mabvura spoke with pride about the company’s commitment to grassroots football, emphasising that BBR sees youth sport as a vital investment in the future of Bulawayo and beyond.

“We are proud to stand behind grassroots football and to see the joy and talent that was on display today. These young players are the future of the game, and it is our honour to support them. We will be back next season with an even bigger sponsorship package, because investing in youth sport is investing in our community’s future.”

Budget Cash & Carry’s involvement in the tournament was warmly welcomed, with their presence adding to the sense of community and support that surrounded the event. Representing the company, Hope Sendamai spoke about the pride Budget Cash & Carry takes in backing grassroots football and the joy of seeing young players showcase their talent on such a stage.

“We believe in giving back to the community, and there is no better way than supporting young people through sport. Watching these children play with such passion and determination has been inspiring. We are proud to be part of the Master Masiku Under‑12 Tournament, and we will continue to stand with grassroots football through backing YFSSA.”
