THE local arts fraternity is in mourning following the death of Titus Chipangura, the former Director of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ).
Mr. Chipangura passed away in England on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Chipangura is remembered for his significant leadership during a transformative era for the arts in Zimbabwe.
He stood at the helm of the parastatal in the early 2000s, during the period when the organisation was still operating under the name National Arts Council (NAC).
In an official statement released today, the NACZ expressed profound grief over the loss of a man who dedicated a significant portion of his career to the development of Zimbabwean culture and creativity.
“The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe notes with deep sadness the passing of our former Director, Mr. Titus Chipangura, who died yesterday in England,” the statement read.
“May his dear soul rest in peace. To the Chipangura family, may the Holy Spirit be your comfort.”
During his tenure, Chipangura was instrumental in navigating the challenges facing the creative sector at the turn of the millennium.
His leadership helped bridge the gap between government policy and the grassroots needs of artists across the country.
His passing marks the end of a chapter for many who served alongside him during the “NAC” era.
Details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
