Lobengula West man jailed five years for assault

A 35-YEAR-OLD man from Bulawayo ran berserk and assaulted a community member by lifting him with his legs and throwing him to the ground over an unknown dispute.

Lungisani Mazanga appeared before a Western Commonage Magistrates facing a charge of assault. He was convicted and sentenced.

He was sentenced to five years in jail. Six months of his sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and he will therefore serve an effective four and half years in prison.

The court heard that on 12 September 2024, Mazanga went to the victim’s mother’s vending stall at Mountain View Shopping Centre in Lobengula West suburb and grabbed the victim.

He held him upside down with the legs facing upwards and threw him to the ground. The victim suffered serious head injuries and was referred to the hospital.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the culprit. In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe warned the public against using violence to solve disputes.

“NPAZ encourages the public to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third party mediation,” read the statement.
