Man gets 10 years for vandalising ZESA cables

A 40-year-old man from Nkulumane 5 suburb in Bulawayo has been sentenced to 10 years for vandalizing ZESA copper cables.
The man, Mugove Makanya, who was convicted for contravention of the Electricity Act, recently appeared before the Western Commonage Magistrates Court.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on September 11, police received information that the accused had copper and wanted to sell it. The team proceeded to investigate the matter.

“At around 1130 pm, Makanya arrived in a taxi and offloaded three sacks that were loaded with copper bars and cores of burnt underground armoured copper cables,” read the statement.

The Police officers approached the accused person and conducted a search leading to his arrest. They also recovered copper bars and cables weighing 55.5kg, valued at US$1 110.
