Local authorities as governance institutions closest to the people have a critical role to play in empowering communities. The Mutare City Dialogue and Technology for Accountability (M-DATA), a project being implemented by City of Mutare in partnership with IRC and PACDEF is aimed at increasing citizen participation in local Government processes and improve stakeholders’ ability to advocate for increased local government accountability.
To date Council has through the M-DATA project held capacity building workshops to fill in training gaps that existed within Council staff and Councillors. Of significant importance is the successful establishment of the Short Messaging (SMS) Hotline.
Through the SMS Hotline Council is expecting an improved communication between Council and the residents.
We appreciate that residents and ratepayers in Mutare are our most important stakeholders and we value their engagement and participation.
As we launch the SMS hotline, council urges citizens to own 34452, the SMS hotline number, and make it one of the important communication platforms as citizen participation will create a great sense of ownership of decisions made and services rendered.
Communication through 34 452 will also allow us as council to fine tune services to ensure that they are based on actual needs.
