Local comedy scene needs more love

COMEDIAN Wilson “MaVery Very” Masakadze strongly believes the flopping of a comic show in which Zambia’s Eric Mwaanga was supposed to perform in Harare is a clear indication that local comedy is under-appreciated.

The Mutare-based artiste, who was recently gifted a vehicle by businessman Wicknell Chivayo, said comedians deserved respect.

“Basically, comedians, just like musicians, play a very important role in entertaining and educating the nation. As such, comedians must also be taken seriously,” he said.

MaVery Very notes the majority of local jesters are “starving”. Social media earnings, he reckons, are not enough to sustain them.

“Most comedians are failing to fully exploit social media for financial gain. As entertainers, we must take a leaf from actors in other countries who are monetising their work,” he said.

Attendance at local comic shows is not that inspiring. Venues like Theatre in the Park have been created to cater for such shows but they are of late being dominated by music gigs.

“I do not understand how a show that was supposed to feature the African Joker flopped. The line-up was impressive, with Doc Vikela and Bhutisi. This was certainly going to be an explosive show but people decided not to give it a chance,” said the former security guard.

The gifted entertainer feels there is need to learn from countries with thriving comedy industries.

“Nigerian comedians are treated like kings and queens while their local counterparts are taken for granted. When I walk on the streets, some people deride me. This must stop,” said the Bikita-born and -bred comedian.

He gave an example of Charles “Marabha” Mirisi, a comedian who is now destitute and homeless.

“Many people like comedy, but they do not want to promote it. If this industry was well-supported, the likes of Kapfupi and Marabha would be very rich today.

“Music promoters should spread their wings and work with jesters. Our sector has great potential if supported.”
