BULAWAYO Djs upstaged South Africa’s DJ Ganyani who put up a below par performance at the much hyped Woza 2014 Bohlingers Tight Party held at Queens Sports Club on New Year’s Eve. Apart from the famous Xigubhu track there was nothing to write home about in his one-and-a-half hour set.
Ganyani dampened the jovial festive mood when he took to the decks at the stroke of midnight to usher in the New Year and played unknown beats.
Local Djs kept the crowd on the dance floor and did not mind being soaked in the rain as they partied into the New Year. Some fans were rolling on the wet grass, others pouring beer on each other enjoying themselves on the dance floor.
DJs Keitho Sbago, Gibson Ncube, Khumz, took revellers to another level as they played hit after hit, sending fans into delirium. Ncube, who plies the trade at ZiFM radio, had the crowd ecstatic when he played the track Umoy’ wami from the legendary Lovemore Majaivana.
Fans in the crowd and VIP section could be seen doing ingquzu, bringing back memories of the self-exiled musician. The talented spinner signed out with Sulumani Chimbetu’s track Sean Timba (Batai Munhu).
Soon afterwards it was time for the count-down and revellers led by Ncube went into frenzy and Ganyani jumped on stage.
Some moments later a fireworks display lit up the grey, rainy sky and upping the mood with revellers screaming and whistling in jubilation that they had made it into the New Year.
However, the joy was short-lived as Ganyani dampened the morale with his unknown deep house mixes, on a rainy night. The deep house mixes led some fans to stand and watch him on the decks others leaving disappointed. Ganyani’s set had no interactivity and all he did was play music quietly without talking to the fans that had come to see him.
The dance floor was soon full as DJ Prince came up to liven up the show, sending the crowd wild with Shinsoman’s track Mawaya Waya and Winky D’s collection as well as the track of the moment on the local scene Ita Seunononga by Guspy Warrior.
He played a mixture of ragga and naija music such as P-Square’s Personally, Chop my money and Alingo, Fuse ODG feat Tiffany Azonto, Antenna he sang with Wyclef Jean and Davido’s Dami Duro among others.
Black Cee and Mzoe did a back-to-back set and kept up the tempo with their house mixes and a signature tribal house set. One wonders why these Djs do not have success and fame as they resuscitated a dying show.
Multi-award winning hip hop dance crew Antivirus also proved that they have graduated from being a dance crew to singing.
They did their song Pokello that was inspired by the queen of swag. The song has a dance called Pokello.
New kid on the block Dj Tik Tok did what he does best and the show was closed by Dj Mphoe.
Exhausted and drenched Sinqobile Tshuma from Emakhandeni said: Delta should improve their guest artiste line up and give more beer at the gate. One can is not enough at least three.”
Others said they wanted performing artistes to grace the occasion as DJs tended to do the same thing.
“They can call Durban’s finest the likes of Tira, Big Nuz and Cyndo. Then we shall enjoy when watching these performing artistes,” said Lungelo Sikhosana, from Nketa 7.
A plus at the show that ended at 5am was that refreshments were affordable.
