Like in the United States and the United Kingdom where hair shows are common, the concept has finally landed in our own backyard and is scheduled to be shot in December.
Basically a hair show is characterised by weird hairstyles that hairdressers are required to make within a stipulated time and models are given an opportunity to walk the ramp as judges choose the most outstanding hairstyles.
The show which will be sponsored by Outré Sensational Hair celebrates the artistry and pure creativity of hairdressing teams from across the country.
Former Miss Zimbabwe runner-up and Outré Sensational Hair brand ambassador Vimbai Katiyo said the show will break new ground for the arts sector and television shows.
“From my experience of hair shows I have witnessed during my stay in the US, such events revive the hair industry and promote innovation and creativity.
“So this is a platform to encourage hairdressers to be innovative and step outside their comfort zone and see how far they can go in terms of creativity.
Katiyo said preparations are underway for the show that will be held in December.
“The hair show is going to be held in December and we are encouraging all hairdressers in Zimbabwe to participate.
“No fixed date has been set yet but we are putting final touches to everything and will make an official announcement in the coming weeks,” she said.
Katiyo said they came up with the idea after realising that there was need for diversity in shows produced.
“I believe hair dressing is equally important in the growth of our economy. There is need to promote the culture of entrepreneurship, promoting vocational skills and supporting the growth of SMEs.
“Diversity is needed in the shows that we are producing in this country, most of them are fashion shows,” he said.
Katiyo has been embarking on workshops that have benefited a lot of people in the hair industry.
“I saw it fit coming up with workshops and activities that would contribute and develop the hair industry in Zimbabwe and also empowering to the hair dressers.
Recently a workshop was held in Bulawayo that was attended by over 100 people while in Harare about 200 people attended the one that was held at Jameson Hotel where they launched new weaves.
The most recent workshop was held at Rainbow Towers under the theme: Building Financial Skills in the Hair Industry, Supporting Women in SMEs and had a total of 400 delegates attended.
The workshops have been a platform to educate, empower and inform people about the upcoming Zimbabwe hair show.
