ZIMBABWE’S top ranked junior tennis player Courtney Lock is angling for a gold medal at the on-going Africa Youth Olympic Games in Gaborone after beating Darvel Valency Mibanga Lossangoye of Gabon 6-3, 6-4 in his opening match.
Lock is confident Nicole Dzenga, who also won her second round match, will bring home a gold medal from Gaborone too. Dzenga beat Olive Tuyisenge of Rwanda 6-0, 6-0.
An upbeat Lock said he was not settling for anything less than gold at the second edition of the Youth Olympics.
“I think we have a good chance of getting some medals. We are going for gold medals.
“I have watched most of the guys play today, we all know each other from the African Junior Championships. And there is not one person I cannot beat here, so I am going for gold,” Lock told Chronicle Sport.
Lock will be buoyed by his recent success in Namibia where he took part in two ITF tournaments.
“I am feeling good. I am playing well, but I will take it match by match,” he said.
Lock and Dzenga also started off well in the mixed doubles when they beat South Africa’s Sarah Sarjoo/Richard Luvuyo Thongoana yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, the netball team will face Swaziland in a fifth place play-off on Friday after collecting one point from their three games so far.
In basketball, Zimbabwe lost to Egypt in the semi-finals. They had beaten Mozambique 13-12 in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, athletics kicks off today at the University of Botswana Stadium in Gaborone.
