COURTNEY LOCK, the youngest member of the Zimbabwe’s Davis Cup team, is excited by the huge strides he is making ahead of the Euro/Africa Group II tie away to Finland in March.
The US based 19-year-old starlet was recently named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after inspiring Louisville University to a convincing start to the new season.
The accolade is highly regarded in American college tennis and comes at a time when Lock is relishing another chance to defend the country’s honour.
Lock, who made his Davis Cup debut against Moldova last year, will be part of team that comprises Takanyi Garanganga, Mark Fynn and his brother Benjamin.
“I have been working a lot with the coaches on my game, my fitness and am looking forward to doing well in the Davis Cup this year.
“I have had a great start to the year after putting in a lot of hardwork during the fall season.
“Playing a lot of matches has been key and as I get older, gain more experience the desire to do well for the country gets much stronger because you now know what the Davis Cup means,” he said.
After getting some recognition for his efforts Lock aims at maintaining his form ahead of a crucial Davis Cup tie that is set to unfold between March 4 and 6.
“It is a great honor to get selected out of the whole conference,” said Lock, in reference to his recent award.
“I have a regular season which goes on until the end of April, then the NCCA tournament and my wish is to better the level I am playing at with each passing level,” said.
Zimbabwe Davis Cup team captain Martin Dzuwa is also charmed by Lock’s good form.
“It’s good for him especially for his confidence ahead of the Davis Cup tie.
“He needs such awards, they are important for self confidence and also it motivates other young players who will have someone to look up to,” said Dzuwa.
