A colleague of mine took to Facebook and posted on his wall what ZBC radio and television programming used to be like. He said when everything was “real” way back in time viewers used to have a time of their lives.
“The week started with ‘Mukadota Family’ on Mondays, Wednesdays were for an intellectual programme called ‘Guest of the Week’.

Thursdays there was a programme called ‘Mvengemvenge’ where the whole family would enjoy local music. Fridays were for ‘Knight Rider’.

He continued saying that: “tainakirwa zvine syllabus but now it’s all nonsense. Without the benefit of proper planning and good material to air, radio and television no longer enjoy the listenership they used to. Yangova njake-njake. But there is room for improvement.

Today’s presenters need to understand that they communicate effectively by understanding the meaning of words they use. Trying to reinvent the dictionary on air has seen most of them come second best.”

Frankly speaking, with the coming of the new board for ZBC one only hopes for better programming, which is the essence of television nowadays.

Oscar Pistorious trial
With reality shows becoming popular on our screens it didn’t come as a surprise to see the trial of Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee Olympian, hogging the limelight.

Just over a year ago, world renowned South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, also known as “The Blade Runner”, was charged with the murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day. He is currently on trial in Pretoria, South Africa.

MultiChoice secured the rights to provide coverage of the Oscar Pistorius trial with in-depth analysis and informed commentary by key personalities on the The Oscar Pistorius Trial – A Carte Blanche Channel, DStv Channel 199.

The trial in itself is reality TV. But just like many other high profile trials remember the OJ Simpson one as well as the Michael Jackson trial which had the media into some kind of frenzy, it’s the same sort of thing with Pistorious’ case.

Carte Blanche which screens every Sundays on M-Net gave an overview of what has transpired with regards to the case.

They simply looked at the prosecution and the defense council. According to one expert, viewers are in for a treat as the trial progresses. Top South African standup comedian Trevor Noah once joked about the murder trial but it looks like there won’t be any jokes until the trial ends.

Big Brother Mzansi Secrets: Lola is evicted
Less than two weeks ago she asked Big Brother for a voluntary exit before changing her mind and remaining in the game, after 35 days in the House, 23-year-old student Lola from Pietermaritzburg was evicted from big Brother Mzansi Secrets.

Nominated alongside Jase, Kat and Thando, Lola scored the fewest viewer votes this week and was promptly eliminated from the 63 day reality series, losing her chance at the mega R 1 million series prize.

Her exit from the house came less than 24 hours after a heated argument between former friends Lola, Thando and Lexi erupted unexpectedly, interrupting what had been a fun birthday for Lexi.

In the course of the argument, Lexi smashed a glass bottle which later earned her a strike from Big Brother for endangering other Housemates with her action.

In a live eviction show Lola told of why she changed her mind saying, “At the end of the day it’s difficult in there and I felt for myself and my health, I wanted to get out of there. I told myself if I am going to leave, I am going to leave the way I am supposed to leave”.

She also spoke about her argument with Lexi, her gossiping with Thando, her blowout with Jase over what she considered a terrible joke, and finally her much talked about panic attack.

When asked about MK, Lola said “MK is one hell of a man”. With Lola out of the game, Cassper Nyovest closed out the show performing his hit track “Doc Shebeleza”.

Big Brother Mzansi Secrets is live 24 /7 to DStv channels 197 and 198 though ALL live Sunday shows are exclusively on Mzansi Magic.

Also on Mzansi Magic – Monday nomination shows (21:30), daily highlights shows from Tuesdays to Fridays (21:30) and weekly highlights on Saturday (17:00).

Wedding Vows
Last week yours truly reviewed what’s been dubbed the Wedding of the Year” of Bona Chikore (nee Mugabe) to Simbarashe Chikore.

The wedding was and still is the talk of the city. One reader thought I did a disservice by not stating exactly the marriage vows, below is what Bona said.

“Standing here today about to become your wife I look back at the journey that has brought us here, we have shared many memories, many thoughts and lots of emotions.

“I remember one morning watching the sun rise at 5am from my bedroom window after spending six hours on the phone with you .  .  . from that moment I knew there was something special.

“I am not an open book to a lot of people but with you I feel comfortable. You have taught me confidence without arrogance, you have helped me become a stronger woman,”

And Simba said; “Today I give you the hint of the rest of your life. The love I contend for you overwhelms me I am helpless when you fix those big eyes on me.

“I love the way you talk on the phone with me for six hours, it’s like you invented conversation. I love the way your favourite colour changes every month.“No man ever found a wife until now,” he said.

Well folks until next week remember this is television and its real.
