Keith Mweemba has been elected the new Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president after receiving 45 votes in a close election at the reconvened Elective Annual General Meeting at Kabwe in Lusaka yesterday.
Mweemba, a highly reputed Lusaka lawyer, will serve for four years from 2025 to 2029, succeeding Andrew Kamanga, who had been in office for nine years.
The election was the culmination of weeks of legal and administrative uncertainty following a court injunction, which had originally delayed the March 29 vote.
The election was keenly observed by a FIFA, CAF, and COSAFA delegation led by FIFA Senior Manager for Member Associations Governance Ahmed Harraz to ensure transparency and compliance with international football governance standards.
Mweemba emerged from a quality field, with Kamanga receiving 20 votes, Adrian Kashala, the ex-FAZ General Secretary, receiving 17, and Emmanuel Munaile and Francis Hafwiti receiving no votes.
The vice president race remains to be won and was heading for a run-off between serving Justin Mumba (41) and Mutale N’gandu (40) late on yesterday, as neither of them reached the requisite majority.
One-vote receipt Christopher Kasale was dropped.
Meanwhile, Priscilla Katoba was returned unopposed as the representative of women and reinforced the expanding role.
