THE Government has unveiled plans for three water projects to provide adequate water supply to Greater Harare by 2027.

These include the Muchekeranwa-Winimbi water supply, the Jonasi Aquifer and the completion of the Kunzvi Dam project.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister, Anxious Masuka, said the Government is working on short, medium and long-term solutions to resolve Harare’s water crisis.

Kunzvi Dam is expected to provide almost 200 megalitres per day, but the Musami system will be needed to provide a long-term water supply for the city.

“The Government has commissioned the Muchekeranwa-Winimbi pipeline and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority has identified a contractor.

“It will supply the Ruwa treatment plant and increase its daily supply to 28 ML per day in areas such as Mabvuku, Tafara and parts of Greendale.

“The Jonasi aquifer has also been identified and will supply 8ML per day.

“We have found a private investor who is capable of drilling cluster boreholes and supplying to the Prince Edward Water Works 78ML per day.

“This will entail that Harare will no longer have to supply Chitungwiza with water as it will be sufficient. “To get to the 1 000ML per day, we have the Kunzvi Dam which is at over 43 percent in terms of construction and we will be able to supply just under 200ML from that system, but it’s still a shortfall.

“This is where the Musami Dam and system comes on board to ensure a long term supply for Harare,” said Minister Masuka.
