WHEN it comes to fashion trends it almost seems that the pregnant mammas are forgotten. Being pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t keep up with the trends and feel fashionable. Pregnancy is no longer considered a time in a woman’s life when she has to wear baggy clothes. Many celebrities have made it fashionable to proudly show their growing bumps, and the general public is following suit. The number of clothing outlets selling maternity clothes is another growing trend, as many popular retailers have launched maternity clothing lines. So head to your favourite retailers that carry maternity clothes, and you might find it’s easy to put together some fashionable outfits that maintain your style.
Personal style is key — You’ll want to feel comfortable while you’re pregnant, and this means being comfortable with what you’re wearing. Add maternity pieces to your wardrobe that show off your personal style, not ones that change it. You don’t have to dress in dreary black to look smaller. Let your wardrobe mirror this happy time in your life with colours that accentuate the glow of your skin.
Go for colour — Don’t limit yourself to black and neutral tones — colour is an essential part of the modern maternity closet. You’ll feel happier when you’re wearing clothes that aren’t drab. But, if you’re really a colour-phobe (or if you’re on a budget), just throw a bright sweater around your shoulders to complement an all-black outfit. Gone are the days when maternity clothes had wild polka dots and other patterns meant to camouflage a woman’s growing figure. If you normally wear solids, then you should stick to your personal style. However, if you are someone who loves floral patterns, pair some bold-print tunics with leggings.
Accessorise — One of the easiest ways to add dimension and flare to an otherwise simple look is to put on your favourite accessories and jewelry. Try long, dangling earrings and big necklaces to de-emphasise fullness in your face. Wear a patterned scarf in your hair, put a jewelled cuff on your wrist, or carry a chic handbag. Better yet, if you’re not going to be on your feet all day, throw on some fun open-toe sandals or sling-backs. Sexy shoes can instantly perk up practically any outfit. Chunky necklaces and bracelets or a big bag can really make a fashion statement, and they are things you can continue to wear post-pregnancy. Don’t forget cool scarves to keep you looking on point.
Wear clothes that fit well — If you enjoyed wearing skinny jeans before you were an expecting mama, don’t be afraid to do tight-fitting pants now just because you’re pregnant. Many maternity lines are now making stretchy, super-comfy (and hot!) skinny jeans and leather leggings that will fit and flaunt your new curves. Reaching for bigger clothes to hide your size sounds like a good idea, but it only contributes to a bulky look. Instead, slim down your silhouette and emphasise the features that aren’t expanding with snug-sleeved tops, skinnier pants, and button-down shirts or blazers (from your pre-pregnancy wardrobe) left unbuttoned. Try knits that stretch to fit your form, they’re sexy and feminine.
Keep your shoes comfortable — When you’re pregnant, your feet may swell, so it’s important to buy new, comfortable shoes that fit your feet. Your feet may go back to their normal size after pregnancy, so don’t purchase expensive shoes, because you may only be wearing them for a few months during your pregnancy. You can buy cheap flats and sandals that are also super cute but make sure they are supportive.
Show some cleavage — Now’s the time to show off your bust by wearing low-cut shirts and V-neck sweaters. V-neck shirts show off a pregnant woman’s figure, and look especially flattering on them. This is optional, of course, if you prefer to dress more modestly. No matter what outfit you choose, the fabric needs to be breathable so you don’t get overheated. This will prevent sweating, and in turn, prevent a heat rash from developing on your skin.
Look chic all the way!
