LOOKING BACK: Unlicensed liquor sale leads to $50 fine

The Rhodesia Herald, 14 February 1978

THREE Salisbury men were each fined $50 (or 25 days) at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court yesterday for selling liquor without a licence or a permit.

They were Joao Maria Ribeira (48), of 283 Rhodes Avenue, Salisbury, Jose Celestino Andrade (40), of 15 Luck Street, Salisbury, and Manuel Jose Godinho (32), of 149 Victoria Street, Salisbury.

They each pleaded guilty to having supplies of liquor on their premises in excess of their personal requirements and to selling the liquor to people who were present when Police raided their premises on February 9.

Godinho had by far the greatest excess supply, with 590 bottles, of which 388 were empty. The magistrate, Mr Terry Scott, ordered that the liquor found in his possession be forfeited to the State. Mr R Sandes prosecuted.
