Loss-making State firms worrisome: Mutambara

Professor Arthur Mutambara has said.

Responding to questions from legislators during a question-and-answer session in Parliament yesterday, DPM Mutambara said Cabinet was seized with issue of the loss-making firms.
“Government’s major role should be to facilitate and make sure we have a viable national airline and all other parastatals,” he said.

“We should look at how other countries are leveraging their parastatals to make them viable.
“The Government does not believe in loss-making parastatals and we want to make sure they perform like those in Singapore, Malaysia and China and we must understand the best global management practice.”

DPM Mutambara said Government had three options in dealing with loss making State firms – privatisation, partnering them with private sector companies and commercialising them.
A number of State enterprises among them Air Zimbabwe and the National Railways of Zimbabwe have been facing emanating of huge debts they are finding difficult to service.
