A VIOLENT man who caused a scene at Fort Rixon business centre, indiscriminately stabbing his love rival and his girlfriend before assaulting and chasing after a police officer, has been convicted and sentenced to serve two years behind bars.
Denis Moyo (26), from Shangani in Matabeleland South Province, appeared on several occasions before Bulawayo regional magistrate, Dambudzo Malunga facing a charge of attempted murder, two counts of assault, and charge of unlawful entry committed in aggravating circumstances and malicious damage to property.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges but after a trial, he was found guilty of attempted murder and malicious damage to property charges. For the attempted murder charge, he was slapped with a five-year jail sentence of which three years were suspended on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence within a period of five years.
For malicious damage to property charge, he was fined US$100. He was acquitted of two counts of assault and unlawful entry committed in aggravating circumstances.
A court heard that on 4 February this year, Moyo confronted his love rival Bhekisisa Nkomo (age not supplied) and accused him of snatching his lover Sharon Mkandla from him.
It is said that after that, the pair was involved in a fierce argument and Moyo took out an Okapi knife from his trousers pocket and allegedly stabbed his rival several times all over the body. After that, he then went after Mkandla and knifed her on the buttocks while she was running for her dear life.
Seeing Moyo going on a rampage, a police officer tried to intervene to arrest him, but his mission was aborted, as Moyo overpowered him and threatened to stab him before punching him, the court heard.
He was not done yet as he pounced on Nkomo’s shop, smashed window panes, and went to a butchery, where he entered and ransacked the office. However, he did not take anything from the office. A resident then reported him to the police, leading to his arrest.
