Valentine’s Day fever gripped Harare yesterday with many people wearing the red colour synonymous with love and buying gifts and flowers for their loved ones.
The Herald caught up with some of the people who were doing something special for their better halves.
“I am buying flowers for my wife. This is a day for celebrating love,” said Mr Tonderai Mhanda of Chisipiti.
Florists recorded brisk business, while restaurants and hotels also said couples were pouring into their establishments.
“This is one of the best days for business in the whole year,” a florist at Africa Unity Square said.
However, some shop owners were singing the blues.
“There is a lot of competition and very little money in people’s pockets,” a shop assistant lamented.
In the First Street Mall, there were long queues at Innscor fastfood outlets at lunchtime and in the evening.
Others put a touch of class to their red outfits.
“My boyfriend supports Manchester United so I have decided to put his name on the back of my jersey to show how much I love him,” said Ms Sarah Nhara of Budiriro.
St Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14 annually.
