LIEUTENANT-GENERAL Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi yesterday officially took over command and control of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).

He assumed the responsibility after he was handed over command by General Emmanuel Matatu, who is now Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri was the chief witness to the command exchange.

In her remarks, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said the command exchange between the two generals was another milestone in the history of the ZNA.

“We witness the smooth, dignified and professional transition of command from the outgoing Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army General Emmanuel Matatu to the incoming Commander Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi,” she said.

“It is pleasing to note that both of you have an illustrious military career that spans from the liberation struggle to independent Zimbabwe.

“You joined the liberation struggle at very tender ages, fought the war of liberation, and formed the Zimbabwe National Army through the integration process.”

Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri challenged the two generals to realise that the responsibilities bestowed upon them were huge.

She also rallied them to ensure the nation remains peaceful.

“It is you who determine the success of defending Zimbabwe’s territorial integrity, as well as shaping the future of our defence force.

“You are also responsible for making crucial decisions that affect the men and women in the force. Your conduct in your positions must inspire and instill confidence and trust in our young men and women who wish to join the force,” said Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri.

The two generals were reminded that their success is underpinned by adhering to three key documents, namely the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the Defence Act and the Defence Policy.

Over the years, the ZNA has remained disciplined, dependable, mission-focused focused and professional, reflecting its highest standards.

Accepting command, Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi said he is aware that the task ahead is big, but pledged to continue with the ZNA modernisation to suit the global warfare trends.

“I will uphold commitment to modernisation of the organisation. We will not fight a past war. The war we will fight is in the future. The threat picture is changing,” he said.

“The technology of warfare is changing. So, if we expect to then deploy with bows and arrows when Zimbabwe is under attack, our parents must just wait to receive thousands of coffins.

“We are determined and the Government is determined to equip us to fight a futuristic war because that is what we are sworn to do.”

The image and good reputation of the ZNA at home and abroad, he said, will be maintained.

Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi added that the army was built over a long period with great sacrifice and has excelled in many places.

“We are held in very high regard, not only in Southern Africa, but in Africa and further afield, and that’s the reputation we want to maintain.

“I call on all officers, men and women of the Zimbabwe National Army, to honour the legacy of those who led this army before us and pledge to continue with the good work that has made the army what it is today,” he said.

Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi said he was grateful to President Mnangagwa for according him a rare chance to be Commander ZNA.

“It is a very onerous and solemn responsibility that I am stepping into. But I promise my feet are elastic. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this esteemed organisation,” he said.

Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi added that the ZNA remains committed to unity, discipline and accountability.

He emphasised the army’s role in protecting citizens, particularly children and women.

His remarks align with the global 16-days activism campaign against violence on women and children.

Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi also addressed the need for fiscal responsibility, urging the army to optimise its resources, suggesting a shift towards a more accountable and people-centric approach, marking a significant moment in the army’s evolution.

Handing over command, outgoing Commander ZNA, now Commander ZDF Gen Matatu, said: “As I stand here before you today to hand over the reins of the army, please note that the nation looks upon us as the Zimbabwe Defence Forces for the maintenance of peace and security that our country needs for its development and its prosperity.

“The Zimbabwe National Army has to be prepared to play its part here at all times. Your selection, among other generals, to command the Zimbabwe National Army is a reflection of the confidence that His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (President Mnangagwa), has in your ability to contribute to this peace and security that the nation desires.”

Gen Matatu said the army has a long and storied history, built on the courage, resilience, sacrifices and professionalism of those who came before them.

“It has performed very well operationally and gained the respect of our allies in the region and further abroad.

“It has excelled in United Nations, African Union, and SADC-sponsored peace support operations. It opened and safeguarded the country’s lifelines through Mozambique, barely a decade into its existence,” he said.

The army also played a significant role in the defence of the DRC’s sovereignty when it came under rebel attack.
