A Zambian man who used a bicycle without the owner’s consent was lucky to escape a custodial sentence after his one-month sentence was wholly suspended.
Sure Munengo aged 22 years of Mwemba district in Zambia appeared before Miss Fungai Dzimiri facing a charge of “unauthorized borrowing or use of property”.
She sentenced him to a one month wholly suspended prison term.
The court heard that on 19 April and at around 1100hrs at Kulima Irrigattion Scheme in Msuna, Munengo gained entry into the scheme after jumping the diamond security fence.
Whilst inside, he took a black buffalo bicycle where it was parked and started cycling around the tree.
He went on to leave the bicycle inside the irrigation and walked towards the direction of the Zambezi River before turning back to the bicycle for the second time.
He was noticed by the owner of the bicycle, Bornface Sibanda (57) of Dambwamukulu Village, Msuna in Hwange and Oliver Nyoni who were inside the irrigation doing general work.
Sibanda called Munengo who complied and approached him before he queried him over the use of the bike without his consent. Munengo failed to give a satisfactory answer resulting in Sibanda reporting the matter to the police.
The value of the stolen bicycle is $200 and it was recovered.
