LONDON. — Romelu Lukaku has lifted the lid on the torments of his poverty-stricken childhood. The Manchester United striker now lives in luxury following his club record 75 million-pound move from Everton last summer.
But Belgium international Lukaku endured a tough upbringing in Antwerp. His family hit the skids after professional footballer dad Roger was forced to retire, and mother Adolphine had to take a series of cleaning jobs despite being seriously ill.
The former Chelsea and West Brom ace (24) said he has been left mentally scarred by his experiences.
Lukaku has scored 16 goals in 31 games for United this season, and is set to face Stoke at Old Trafford next Monday. He recalled: “When my father stopped playing we landed in a hole financially. People left us to fend for ourselves, and I have always kept that in my mind. — The Sun.
