Kwekwe City Council’s stock of water treatment chemicals has been depleted to worrying levels and its water supply has become erratic as it continues to battle foreign currency shortages.Kwekwe mayor Councillor Matenda Madzoke said the situation was still manageable.
“Although I can confirm that our stocks are now low because of the shortage of foreign currency, however, it is not that serious and I can assure our ratepayers that everything is under control because we don’t want to press panic buttons,” he said. Cllr Madzoke said they had since engaged their bank on the way forward.
“I am happy to announce that they are forthcoming and dedicated to see the continued running water supply in our city,” he said. “The town has been experiencing erratic water supplies as a result of the shortage of the water treatment chemicals.”
Satellite towns have also been affected. Redcliff town clerk Mr Gilson Chakauya told The Herald that because of the shortage of water treatment chemicals in Kwekwe, the satellite town had gone for nearly three months without running water.
“We rely on Kwekwe for water, but they are telling us that they are facing shortages of water treatment chemicals,” he said. “We are, therefore, facing some water challenges.” Mr Chakauya said Redcliff was in the process of constructing its own water treatment plant.
