LUSAKA. — Outgoing Zambian head of state Edgar Lungu has pledged to work with President-elect Hakainde Hichilema to ensure a smooth transition of authority so that the country remains peaceful.
Mr Lungu has also assured the nation that he will not petition the August 12 election results to avoid tension in the country.
He said party members may, however, petition election losses at parliamentary level.
Lungu has since appealed to Patriotic Front (PF) members not to retaliate when provoked by United Party for National Development (UPND) supporters to avoid plunging the country into chaos.
He said should there be chaos in the country, those that would suffer are the ordinary Zambians.
Meanwhile, Hichilema said on Wednesday there will be an independent, professional and well-remunerated civil service which will foster economic development under the UPND government.
Hichilema, who will be sworn in on Tuesday next week, said this at his New Kasama residence when he met secretary to the Cabinet Simon Miti.
“Together with you fellow Zambians, the public workers and private sector, we will ensure that our economic vision comes to fruition,” he said in a post on his Facebook page.
Yesterday Hichilema held a meeting with Ambassadors Anne Wagner-Mitchell of Germany, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury of Finland, Anna Maj Hultgård of Sweden, and Ambassador Antonio Maggiore of Italy. – Zambia Daily Mail.
