LUPANE is beginning to stake its claim in the Rhumba field, a space that has for years been largely dominated by Plumtree, Tsholotsho and Kezi.

Plumtree has long been considered one of the genre’s strongest pillars, producing acts such as Mxolisi Mr Bones, Clement Magwaza, Godolude, Mokisi Connection, Dubia Masters, Mlambos Express Band, DJ 20, Dupute Warriors, Abafundisi, Private Boys, Prosper Bafana, Chase Skuza, and the late Solomon and Khumbulani Skuza.

From Tsholotsho came popular outfits including Insimbi ZeZhwane, Tsebebha Boyz, Zhwane Diamond Express and Obadiah Matulana, while Kezi has given birth to names like Themba “Boyoyo” Mathe, Ndux Malax, Ndux Junior, Mcebesi and Amathonga Brothers, Modious Chauke and Dumezweni Mazilankatha, among others.

Methuseli Mpofu

Now, Lupane enters the mix leading the charge is 24 year old Mduduzi Nkosiyabafana Bhebhe, the frontman of Intababa Zamalinda Express band.

The talented composer previously worked with Isolezwe Express Band before embarking on his own path.

“I was born in Lupane’s Lusulu area and my interest in music began during my school days. I embarked on my musical journey with the guidance of Isolezwe Express Band’s frontman, who helped me begin my professional journey. I assisted with compositions and vocals before we went our separate ways,” he said.

Now based in South Africa, Bhebhe is collaborating with Methuseli Mpofu from Nkayi. Bhebhe’s debut album, Iphepha Lami, was recently launched in South Africa and carries five tracks; Ibhola Lomculo, Iphepha Lami, Isidleke, Obuka Bhuka and Ilamba Lidlile. A listen to the album shows clean melodies and a fresh sound that reflects the band’s growing identity.

Bhebhe said his mission is to break into an already saturated Rhumba scene.
“I’ve gained so much experience in the industry, and I hope to use it to push my brand. My wish is for fans to give us an ear and support us. This is just the beginning; more is coming. Music runs in the blood,” he said.

He added that they are putting together a full band to enable them to start live shows and strengthen their brand visibility. He said social media has become one of their strongest marketing tools, yielding encouraging results. —@themkhust
