Luque puts Gorimbo to sleep

Vicente Luque reminded everyone why he’s one of the most decorated finishers in UFC history.

The veteran welterweight needed just 52 seconds to hurt Zimbabwean Themba Gorimbo on the feet and finish him on the ground in their preliminary bout at UFC 310 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Luque’s weapon of choice this time around was an airtight choke (officially announced as a D’Arce choke, though it appeared to be an anaconda), which put Gorimbo to sleep in the first round.

That’s 14 finishes in the UFC now for Luque (23-10-1), who remains second behind Matt Brown (15) for the most finishes in the history of the promotion’s welterweight division. During his post-fight interview, Luque stated his intent to eventually set a record that will never be broken.

It was a big win for Luque, who had lost three of his past four bouts. He improved his UFC record to 16-6 and moves into a tie with Matt Hughes for the fourth-most wins at 170 pounds in UFC history, behind only Brown (17), Georges St-Pierre (19), and Neil Magny (22). Gorimbo (14-5) stepped in on less than a month’s notice for Nick Diaz. He sees a four-fight win streak come to an end —MMA.
