The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe wants to establish a university in Mberengwa to complement Government’s efforts of making higher education available for all. The move is also expected to avail church members a chance to attain theological and agricultural courses. Presiding Bishop Chemist Kenias Faindi, speaking on the sidelines of the three day men’s fellowship which ended on Sunday, said the plan was in its initial stages.

“Yes we want to have a Lutheran University. Of course there is a lot of ground work that has taken place so far, but still we will need to mobilise resources so that we can come up with the university. The possible area for the university could be Munene Farm because we have space there where we can establish a university.” Bishop Faindi said the church was looking for partners for the project.

“The members are also going to contribute towards the construction of the university because they want it. But mostly we will look for partners either our sister churches outside Zimbabwe or the business community in the country who could come in and assist us.” The church currently runs a number of primary and secondary schools in Gwanda, Beitbridge and Munene, Musume, Zezani, Chegato, Manama and Masase. However, some of the students from these schools cannot afford to go to other universities hence the need for the church to have its own.
