LVG won’t move upstairs

MANCHESTER. — Manchester United have dismissed suggestions that Louis Van Gaal could “move upstairs” to make room for Jose Mourinho. United sources say they are not looking for, and have never wanted, a technical/sporting director and won’t create the role just for convenience sake. It has been reported that Van Gaal would become technical director to allow Mourinho to take the manager’s job.

But it is not going to happen.

United’s “model” has always been to leave all football matters and transfer strategy in the total control of the manager, with the chief executive executing the deals. And that will not change whoever the manager is.

The smoke signals at Old Trafford are indicating that Van Gaal will stay in charge for the final season on his contract, regardless of the outcome of today’s FA Cup final.

Having failed to guide the club to Champions League qualification, it was thought Van Gaal would need to beat Crystal Palace and win the Cup to keep his job.

But he has been insisting for weeks that he will still be in the job next season and believes he retains the support of senior figures at Old Trafford. He has been openly telling people “see you next seaosn.” — The Daily Express.
