Mabhena to head new NRZ board

Harare Bureau
TRANSPORT and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu has appointed former Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation chairman Godwills Masimirembwa the new CMED (Pvt) Ltd chairperson, taking over from Albert Kamhunga.Masimirembwa will be deputised by Seymour Mpofu, a former police Assistant Commissioner.

Other board members are Chipiwa Philimon Pasipamire, Sihle Khabo, Tinotenda Nhwewde, Phinias Lugube, Engineer Tedious Chinyanga and Rita Lukukuma.

Dr Mpofu said the board was appointed after an intense selection process over many months, and it should work towards ensuring the success of the government’s economic blueprint, Zim-Asset.

“The government has provided clear guidelines and performance benchmarks which as a ministry we have fully embraced,” he said.

“This has been cascaded to all parastatals and State-owned enterprises for implementation, CMED included.”

Masimirembwa said: “We will assist the ministry to meet the Zim-Asset obligations, but it requires unity. As for my exoneration (after being implicated in a $6 million bribe scam), His Excellency (President Mugabe) said he was misled and the ministry, with the approval of the executive, has seen that I’m fit to be part of this team, in fact to lead it.”

Dr Mpofu also announced a new National Railways of Zimbabwe board, chaired by former NRZ general manager Engineer Alvord Mabhena.

“We’re aware that there is mismatch between staffing levels and the business levels being generated by NRZ, but note that we appoint boards not to retrench, but develop strategies that minimise the need for retrenchment,” Dr Mpofu said.

Eng Mabhena is deputised by Brigadier-General (Retired) David Chiweza, the only surviving member of the previous board. Other board members are Joseph Mashika, Erick Makarimayi, Nomathemba Ndlovu, Chrystosoma Kanjoma and Angeline Karonga.
