THEY now call it the ‘TURN-OFF OF DEATH,’ and Mabvuku residents are wondering if the latest focus on this black spot will finally end their nightmare.
A day after the Harare City Council announced they will install traffic lights at the dangerous area, along the Mutare Road, some residents of the eastern Harare suburb remain suspicious nothing will happen.
Lack of traffic lights and signs warning of the high accident rate have contributed to the situation.
Drivers are also being accused of reckless behaviour and excessive speeding.
On Monday, four people died while others were hospitalised.
Less than 24 hours after that fatal accident, another accident occurred in the same area.
H-Metro were in Mabvuku yesterday and the residents of this suburb are not so sure things will change for them even after the latest tragedy.
“On so many occasions, we have heard the Harare City Council saying it is working on installing traffic lights, but nothing has been done.
“This spot needs road signs to show that it is a high accident zone.
“Please, do something,” said Simon Murungwei, a Mabvuku resident.
Other residents said some motorists race along that stretch, ignoring the speed limit.
“You see some people driving on the wrong side of the road.
“Some public transport drivers are too young and careless.
“Most of the mushika-shika drivers are careless and you cannot restrain them because they attack you.
“There is need for the police to man the junction until traffic lights or humps are erected,” said Marylyn Hapadziwi.
